About Us

In 1981, we responded to a real estate ad that said, "buy yourself a job." That's when we purchased the Seaside Motel and discovered the ad was incorrect. It hasn't been a job, but instead instantly became our passion. Since our opening on July 9, 1981, we have renovated, remodeled, cleaned, painted, entertained, baked cookies, planted seasonal gardens and raised two delightful boys (now young men). We have enjoyed thousands of guests, many of whom have become friends and visit us multiple times during the year.

The romance of the past is still present at the Seaside Motel in tiny Cayucos, the last great funky beach town in California. Once a port of call for the sailing ships delivering cargo up and down the coast during the 1880s, Cayucos still retains its old California charm. Its distinctive original buildings with their old west wood faux-front now house boutiques, galleries and antique shops, but they were once a haven for rum-runners and gamblers. The old fire bellstill in its tower on Cayucos Streetrang during Prohibition years to alert the town that the revenuers were coming!

During the 1930s, a small rest stop was built in the rambling court-style popular in small California seaside towns. People escaping from large cities began to discover the Seaside Motel, and for more than 5 decades they have revived and rejuvenated their energy here, quietly in Cayucos.

"So pleased we came across this unique place.  So different from the other motels.  Lovely room, beautiful garden and a great start to our first trip to the California coast."
Dennis & Carol, England

Every room has its own delightful and comfortable decor, with pretty fabrics, charming original art painted right onto the walls, and flowers everywhere. You see, not every guest has the same taste. So we've given each room its own unique atmosphere, which seems to bring our guests back, year after year. One thing our rooms do have in common is the sounds and smells of the nearby oceanwhich is just a stone's throw away.

Over the years we've added our own special touches to the motel. In fact, from the three-tiered Italian fountain in the front yard to the hand painted mural on the parking lot fence, you'll see that we take great pride in even the tiniest detail. In fact, one dear friend and customer, artist Laura Cramer, has done much of the hand painted touches in every room.

Local nurseries special order colorful annuals and perennials for our garden, which is ever changing. It's nice when people stop by and tell us they get ideas for their gardens from ours. Roses are our central theme, and here they defy nature by growing so close to the ocean. Here you will see them in an astonishing array of shapes and sizes, and in almost every color of the spectrum in our garden patio.  Our garden and patio are like none you have ever seen, with a huge display of birdhouses, antique collectibles, hand-painted flower pots all sharing our fabulous ocean view.  Each season presents  a new variety of colorful flowers in our garden patio, where you are welcome to utilize our barbecue, if you're so inclined. Through the years, we have added to our ever-growing collection of unique holiday decorations. To mark each holiday, we set out our complete display, to the delight of our clients and townfolks.

And for those guests who don't want to completely disassociate themselves from the outside world, each room has a private telephone, television, VCR and free high speed internet access.

We run our motel like a "home," and have found our guests to be more like family and good friends, returning several times a year.

You are invited to come stay with us.

My friend and I come from one of the most beautiful places in the world - we thought - but, I think it comes in second to your lovely home.  I don't think I have ever been in a nicer motel or met any nicer people than here.  Thank you for making our stay so pleasant."
